Mortenson Construction breaks ground on Silver Cross Hospital

by Illinois Real Estate Journal Reports
Chicago -> Will/Grundy

The same shovel used in 1892 to break ground for the original hospital building in Joliet was used again September 24 to break ground at the new Silver Cross Replacement Hospital. Following the ceremony at the construction site over 500 guests attended the community celebration at the Joliet Hospital.

"Private, larger, family-friendly rooms will improve patient care and permit more personalized treatment," said Greg Werner, vice president of Mortenson Construction, the construction management company for Silver Cross. The rooms will also accommodate today's medical technology to reduce unnecessary transfers, the risk of infection and injury. RTKL Architects designed the new hospital.

Doctors from Children's Memorial Hospital will also be in residence at the new 70-acre campus so that area families won't have to travel all the way into Chicago for pediatric specialty care.

The $400 million, 289-bed state-of-the-art Silver Cross facility is scheduled to open in 2012.
